Sciatica Treatments

Sciatic pain is nerve pain that shoots down the back of the leg due to compression of the sciatic nerve. The sciatic nerve is located from the sacral plexus in the lumbar spine down to the lower leg. The primary cause of this pain is tightness in the piriformis muscle that sits underneath the gluteus maximus and on top of the sciatic nerve. Pain in this sciatic nerve can also be due to tightness in the pelvis or hips causing improper mobility of the low back-hip complex. This is the most common self- diagnosed complaint that Chiropractors see in office, but it is often misdiagnosed.

Typically, nerve pain shooting down the leg is due to a disc bulge, herniated disc, or disc protrusion. Disc problems are seen in roughly 85% of the population between the ages of 20-40 and most commonly seen in men. The disc in the spine acts as a “shock absorber” and controls compressive forces to the spine. After constant repetitive improper bending, lifting, and sitting for long hours the disc material begins to press on the nerve. The pain presents as “the straw that broke the camel’s back” and is not often due to only one incident. When disc material presses on a nerve in the lumbar spine, pain, numbness, tingling, or weakness will be present in the leg. This type of pain can extremely interfere with activities of daily living and must be address as soon as symptoms start. If this condition goes untreated symptoms will get significantly worse and surgery may be the only option. Chiropractic care should be the first line of defense if you suspect sciatic pain or a disc herniation in order to avoid the chances of needing surgery.
